Common Illnesses in Children During the Winter

Common Illnesses in Children During the Winter

The winter season is here and it brings with it several illnesses that can infect your child. While most people believe the cold weather to bring illnesses such as colds and the flu, this is not entirely true. With how cold it is outside, children tend to spend more time indoors together which makes it easier for germs and infections to pass on.

As a home care agency in Stafford, Virginia we always look out for the following common illnesses in children during the winter season:

  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
This causes bronchiolitis in children less than 2 years of age and can be serious in infants. It is characterized by cough, runny nose, fever, upper airway congestion, and rapid breathing.
  • Influenza/flu
A very contagious respiratory virus that can include symptoms such as high fever, body aches, runny nose, and vomiting or diarrhea
  • Common cold
While this is associated with mild symptoms, children can have a low-grade fever early on
  • Strep throat
This contagious bacterial infection is common in children ages 5 and 15.
  • Stomach flu
Also known as viral gastroenteritis, this intestinal infection is commonly caused by norovirus.

Our certified nursing assistants recommend frequent sanitation, getting a vaccine, staying, and eating healthy to prevent these illnesses. If you or your child is not feeling well, stay at home to prevent the spread of germs.
